Coptic Stitch Book with Gretchen Allen

Date

This style of binding dates back to the 2nd century AD in Egypt where  it was developed by the early Christians or Copts. The style allows for the book to open flat making it easier for illustrating and writing.

The price for the workshop includes all materials and you will walk away with your book at the end of the class. The workshop takes place in Terenure in the studio over our shop.

Gretchen Allen is a book and paper conservator and illustrator. She is originally from Seattle, USA, and now lives and works in Dublin. In addition to her conservation work, Gretchen teaches classes, illustrates for conservation publications, and creates graphic novels and webcomics.

Fantastic session

I really enjoyed this Coptic stich book session. The class was well structured with a good pace that accommodated the different needs of the group. Gretchen's approach is very personalized and she provides really clear and supportive guidance. So happy with my final product.

Fun and creative

Gretchen is a generous, skilled, encouraging and reassuring teacher. She communicates her love of books and bookbinding so clearly. She manages to pass on the technical details, new vocabulary and curiosity with a sprinkling of humorous history and anecdotes from her professional experience - this lady knows her books! Great satisfaction to produce a rather gorgeous completed book by the end of the workshop. Extraordinary that each of the completed books was so completely different, even though we were all following the same instructions. We had laughter and fun and the time passed so quickly. I already have my eye on other papers from the glorious selection available. There will be hand-made books for Christmas!
